How Does A Screen Reader Work?
March 19th, 2010
Most screen reader software no longer requires the user to employ the PC mouse. Since the standard keyboard is already designed in such a way that even the visually impaired can use it, all commands and operations are done through it. Besides this, most operating systems have shortcut keys, which enable the user to execute commands without having to click the mouse. This is how a user communicates to the computer.
On the other hand, there are two ways for the computer to pass data on the screen to the user. It is through text-to-speech software engine through Braille. Since most computers nowadays are equipped with sound cards, TTS has been the preferred method of receiving information. Through this, the computer reads whatever character appears on the screen and typed or encoded by the user. For those comfortable with Braille, a Braille display will have to be attached to the computer first.
